Chhattisgarh is a state in central India, with Raipur as the state capital. The state gained statehood on November 1, 2000 after it got divided from Madhya Pradesh. It is the 10th largest state of India by area. Chhattisgarh takes its name from 36 (Chattis is thirty-six in Hindi and Garh is Fort) princely states in this region. Chhattisgarh is bordered by Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh in the north, Andhra Pradesh in the south, Orissa in the east and Madhya Pradesh in the west. Chattisgarh has a population density of 154 person per square kilometer, the highest concentration being in the areas of Raipur and Durg.
Chhattisgarh is a young state on an ancient land. In the ancient times, it was referred to as the “Dakshin Kosalaâ€. It is the most thickly forested and tribal dominated state in India. Chhattisgarh came to the fore only in the year 2000. The dense forests and wildlife are the reasons for its rich bio-diversity. The historical sites in this state have a lot of significance and are a major tourist attraction. Shopping is something every tourist looks forward to while travelling to different places. Northern Chhattisgarh - Surguja, Korba and Bilaspur Bilaspur is the main attraction in this part of Chhattisgarh. It is the second largest city in this state and is known for the kosa silk which is available everywhere in the State. Ratanpur, which is around 25 kilometres from Bilaspur, is a tourist spot. The ruins of old forts are situate here. The sculptures of Hindu gods are another treat to the eyes. Temples in this region have a lot of cultural value and are rated highly by the pilgrims. The Baba Bairavnath temple which has a nine foot idol is a very popular location here. The Laxmi temple on top of the hill is also a noteworthy tourist spot. Tourists can spend two days here to take a look at everything Northern Chhattisgarh has to offer. Mallhar and Kutaghat Dam are the other major attractions in Bilaspur. The Khadia dam, however, is the pick among all the beautiful places in Bilaspur. Korba is the centre of production of the Kosa silk. Shopping is the main reason tourists visit this place. The climate is also very friendly and conducive for a good ride. Surguja is a religious destination in Northern Chhattisgarh. Every year, there are innumerable pilgrims who visit to worship. Due to its altitude, this place has an enjoyable climate throughout the year. Some of the main attractions are the Mahamaya temple, Thinthini Patthar, Kudargarh, Ramgarh and Sita Bengra and Tata Pani. Central Chhattisgarh - Raipur Raipur makes most of the central domain of Chhattisgarh. It is the biggest city in this region and is a fast developing industrial centre. Champaran, a village near Raipur, is where tourists flock each year. It has a lot of religious significance as this was the place where the Saint Vallabhacharya was born. Turturiya, another village, is a picturesque location surrounded by dense forests. You get to see some ancient ruins and temples on your way to this place. The Laxman and Gandheswar Temple in Sirpur are other major religious destinations. Tourists can look forward to the Hareli festival if they reach at the right time. This festival of the farmers is an enchanting experience for any tourist. On the whole, central Chhattisgarh is a wonderful place to spend some time and revel in the religious destinations.
